Have a New Cedar Deck? DON'T WAIT!!!!!
When you have a new cedar deck, getting it stained right away is a must. If you wait, the UV rays can develop a gray wood-cell film. This causes the wood to deteriorate quickly. If gray film develops, it will need to be removed with pressure washing before staining occurs. When removing gray film, it can "fur up" the wood slightly. This doesn't damage the wood, but will show after staining. These wood fibers typically will wear off naturally with time, but will be visible after staining, specifically around the knots. The best way to avoid this is to use a stain that specializes in new wood application 4-8 weeks after wood installation is complete.
What we do at OPW decks is have the special stain that allows us to stain new cedar decks to avoid discoloration in the future.
